Our Commitment

Zippylang is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone, and applying relevant accessibility standards.

As an educational platform designed for primary school children (ages 5-11), we recognise the importance of making our content accessible to all learners, including those with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments.

Conformance Status

Zippylang aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

We are committed to meeting the requirements of the European Accessibility Act (EAA)and the EN 301 549 standard for digital accessibility within the European Union.

Accessibility Features

The following are in place today. Where a feature is partial, it is listed under Known Limitations below rather than here.

• Keyboard Navigation: Lessons, quizzes, games and the sign-in and join flows can be completed with a keyboard alone
• Skip Links: Skip navigation links to jump directly to main content
• Screen Reader Support: Semantic HTML, accessible names on icon-only buttons, and the language a word belongs to marked up so the right voice is used
• Reduced Motion: Respects user's system preference to reduce animations
• Focus Indicators: Visible focus states on all interactive elements
• Text-to-Speech: Audio pronunciation for language learning content
• Clear Language: Simple, child-friendly language throughout the platform
• Colour Contrast: Text and icons on our public pages and pupil screens meet WCAG AA contrast (4.5:1 for text, 3:1 for icons)
• Not Colour Alone: Right and wrong answers carry an icon and a word as well as a colour, and results are announced to screen readers
• Scalable Text: Content supports browser zoom up to 200%
• AI Disclosure: Clear indication when interacting with AI-generated content

Known Limitations

While we strive for full accessibility, some content may have limitations:

• Interactive Games: The games are keyboard-operable and labelled, but picture-matching still depends on recognising an image. We are working on alternative experiences.
• Teacher Dashboard: Our contrast sweep so far covers the public site and pupil screens. The teacher and admin areas have not been swept to the same standard.
• Independent Audit: These claims come from our own testing. We have not yet commissioned an external accessibility audit.
• Third-party Content: Embedded content from third parties may not meet all accessibility standards.
• PDF Downloads: Some downloadable worksheets may have accessibility limitations.
